SUMMARY OF THE REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPMENT FORUM
SEDIMENTS REMEDIATION ACTION TEAM
GROUND WATER-SURFACE WATER INTERACTIONS WORKGROUP
CONFERENCE CALL

2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
August 5, 2003

On August 5, 2003, the following members of the Remediation Technologies Development Forum's (RTDF's) Sediments Remediation Action Team, Ground Water-Surface Water Interactions Workgroup, met in a conference call:

Nancy Grosso, DuPont Corporate Remediation (Action Team Co-chair)
Bob Maxey, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Solid Waste
Ralph Stahl, DuPont

Christine Hartnett of ERG was also present.

THE GROUND WATER-SURFACE WATER INTERACTION PAPER

The Sediments Remediation Action Team's Ground Water-Surface Water Interactions Workgroup is writing a paper. Nancy Grosso scheduled this conference call to find out whether Workgroup members have gathered information for the paper. Prior to the call, Grosso distributed a DuPont document called Approaches and Considerations for Evaluating Potential Groundwater Impact on Surface Water. This document, which one of Grosso's colleagues generated, is used internally by DuPont project managers. It helps people examine the way that contaminants move in a system. It explains how to estimate ground-water discharge, estimate plume concentrations, and evaluate flow into receiving water bodies. Grosso agreed to distill the information it contains and to incorporate that information into the Workgroup's paper. She also agreed to ask Peter Adriaens to provide information for the paper. Once Grosso receives Adriaens' materials, she will develop a first draft of the Workgroup paper and distribute it for review. Grosso expected to finish this activity by August 13, 2003.

Bob Maxey said that the DuPont document introduces some excellent ideas, but he warned that some of the ideas have met resistance from EPA. Grosso did not think this was a problem. She said that readers will not be led to believe that the ideas presented in the Workgroup paper are endorsed by EPA in any way. She agreed to make it clear that the Workgroup's paper is simply designed to present ideas that have been put forth by a group of technical experts.

THE NEXT SEDIMENTS REMEDIATION ACTION TEAM MEETING

Grosso said that the next Sediments Remediation Action Team meeting will be held somewhere along the East Coast in December 2003. Baltimore has been listed as one potential location and December 9 and 10 have been recommended as potential dates. Grosso said that Kelly Madalinski will contact ERG to begin planning the meeting. Maxey said that he is willing to deliver a presentation on ground water-surface water interactions during the meeting. (Maxey already plans to develop such a presentation for an upcoming RCRA conference.) Grosso said that she would let Maxey know if his presentation fits into the meeting agenda.
