SEDIMENT ISSUES

Availability of dissolved oxygen decreases sharply

with sediment depth;

Sediments are reentrained due to flow and mixing,

resulting in exposure of shallow buried contaminants,

adsorbed in the sediment particles;

Sediments, due to high organic carbon can serve

as a major reservoir of hydrophobic contaminants,

such as PAHs.
