CHLORINATED SOLVENTS SUBGROUP

On Wednesday, April 24, 2002, the following members of the Remediation Technologies Development Forum's (RTDF's) Chlorinated Solvents Subgroup met in a conference call:
Bob Tossell, CH2M Hill, Inc.
Valentine Nzengung, University of Georgia
Xiujin Qiu, The Dow Chemical Company
Steve Rock, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Also participating in the call was Christine Hartnett from Eastern Research Group, Inc. (ERG).
SUBGROUP PROTOCOL
The Subgroup has been working on a protocol that describes how to assess phytoremediation at chlorinated solvent sites. Bob Tossell sent out a revised version of the document in mid-April. Call participants discussed the following sections:
- Section 2--Flowchart. A flowchart has been created to help users determine whether phytoremediation is a viable option at their site. Tossell asked Subgroup members to review the chart before the next call. (Subgroup members should review the electronic version rather than a hard copy; they will need to double click on the chart to view it in entirety. Tossell is working on formatting the chart so that the double click will not be necessary in the future.)
- Section 5--Analytical Methods. Call participants agreed that information about standard analytical methods should be summarized in a table. More detail will be provided about methods that are not already widely publicized.
ACTION ITEMS
- Subgroup members should review the protocol and submit comments. Tossell asked call
participants to pay particular attention to new sections, which are highlighted in red.
- Tossell has received useful information from Valentine Nzengung; this will be incorporated into the next version of the protocol.
- Tossell will contact Lee Newman to obtain references for analytical methods.
- Tossell will contact Linda Fiedler to find out whether EPA's Technology Innovation Office can format the Subgroup's document and figures. He will also ask her to set up an FTP site.
- ERG will set up the next conference call for May 29, 2002, between 1:00 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Eastern Standard Time.
