CONFERENCE CALL

January 24, 2002
1:00 p.m.-2:30 p.m.

On January 24, 2002, the following members of the Remediation Technologies Development Forum's Phytoremediation Action Team, Chlorinated Solvents Subgroup, met via conference call:

Bob Tossell, CH2M Hill, Inc.
Linda Fiedler, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
Jim Jordahl, CH2M Hill, Inc.
Xiujin Qiu, The Dow Chemical Company

Also present was Christine Hartnett of Eastern Research Group, Inc. (ERG).

SUMMARY

The Chlorinated Solvents Subgroup is writing a short protocol that describes (1) how to determine whether phytoremediation is appropriate to use at a given site and (2) how to evaluate the technology's performance. Bob Tossell and Jim Jordahl will complete a draft of the protocol by February 28, 2002, and distribute it for review. Ideally, Tossell said, the protocol will be used to assess specific sites. At one point, he said, the Center for Waste Reduction Technologies was interested in using the protocol, but their plans have been stalled and it is unclear whether they will proceed with a phytoremediation project any time soon. Tossell said that it may be possible to get a funding agency (like the Environmental Security Technology Certification Program) interested in using the Subgroup's protocol.
