SUMMARY OF THE REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPMENT FORUM
PERMEABLE REACTIVE BARRIERS ACTION TEAM
STEERING COMMITTEE CONFERENCE CALL
2:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m.
August 31, 2004
On Tuesday, August 31, 2004, the following members of the Remediation Technologies Development
Forum's Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRB) Action Team's Steering Committee met in a conference
call:
Bob Puls, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (Action Team Co-chair)
John Vidumsky, DuPont (Action Team Co-chair)
Tom Krug, GeoSyntec
Michelle Thomson, URS Corporation
Also participating in the call was Christine Hartnett from ERG.
NEXT PRB ACTION TEAM MEETING
The next PRB Action Team meeting will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during the last week
of October 2004. The meeting will take place at the Best Western Winrock Inn, which is located across
the street from where the Interstate Technology Regulatory Council (ITRC) plans to meet.
Call participants agreed that the RTDF meeting, which will span 1½ days, will commence on the
morning of October 26 and conclude at noon on October 27, 2004. In addition, a small PRB Steering
Committee meeting will be held on the evening of October 25, 2004, starting at 7:00 p.m. and ending at
9:00 p.m. If enough interest exists, a poster session will be planned for the evening of October 26, 2004.
The following three topical areas will be explored during the meeting:
- Source treatment for dense non-aqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs) and nanoscale iron applications.
John Vidumsky, who has agreed to chair this topical session, said that he knows some people who
might be interested in delivering presentations on this topic. For example, he said, Tom Sale will be
invited to speak about the zero-valent iron (ZVI) source treatment work he is performing through
Colorado State University. Michelle Thomson said that Richard Mach has also been identified as a
potential speaker, and that she is waiting to receive abstracts from some additional people. Bob Puls
said that John Liskowitz of ARS Technologies, Inc., expressed interest in presenting information
about work to address source areas at Department of Defense sites. Tom Krug said that he could
identify someone to speak about the work GeoSyntec is performing with emulsified ZVI.
- Alternative media and innovative applications. Krug, who has agreed to chair this session, indicated
that he has identified some potential speakers for this topical session. For example, a representative
from Adventus Remediation Technologies, Inc., might be willing to deliver a presentation on this
topic, and someone from GeoSyntec will be identified to speak about biomulch walls. In addition,
Sale will be invited to present information about e-barriers.
- Other laboratory and field studies. No speakers have been identified for this session yet.
Call participants discussed methods for advertising the meeting and emphasized the importance of:
- Distributing a meeting invitation. Christine Hartnett said that ERG plans to send a meeting invitation to the entire PRB Action Team by the end of the week.
- Advertizing the meeting via TechDirect. Puls said that EPA's Jeff Heimerman has agreed to announce the PRB meeting in the September and October issues of TechDirect. The announcement
will include a call for abstracts.
- Making sure that ITRC meeting attendees know that the RTDF PRB Action Team meeting is taking
place across the street. ERG will communicate with the ITRC meeting planners to explore ways to
advertise the PRB meeting to the ITRC membership. In addition, ERG will contact the leaders for the
following ITRC Teams: DNAPL, Arsenic in Groundwater, Bioremediation of DNAPL, PRBs, and
Radionuclides. ERG will let the Team Leads know that an RTDF meeting is scheduled to take place
across the street from the ITRC meeting and that a detailed agenda will be distributed in early
October.
ACTION ITEMS
- Puls will contact Bob Gillham to invite him to serve as the chair for the "Other Laboratory and Field
Study" session. If Gillham is unavailable, Puls said, he will take on the responsibility of chairing the session.
- The session chairs will continue to identify speakers for the meeting. As part of this effort:
– Puls will forward an email from John Liskowitz (of ARS Technologies) to Vidumsky.
– Krug will identify someone to speak about the emulsified ZVI work that GeoSyntec is
performing and let Vidumsky know who has been selected to deliver the presentation.
- Call participants agreed to make an effort to identify sponsors for coffee breaks and refreshments.
Krug agreed to contact Adventus and Puls agreed to contact Connelly, GeoSierra, and ARS
Technologies to determine whether they are interested in sponsoring the meeting. GeoSyntec and ETI
were also identified as possible candidates.
- Vidumsky will invite Tom Sale to participate in the PRB Steering Committee meeting that is
scheduled to take place on October 25, 2004.
- ERG will distribute a meeting invitation by the end of the week. In addition, ERG will communicate
with ITRC meeting planners and Team Leads to make sure that they are aware that the PRB Action
Team has scheduled a meeting across the street from the ITRC meeting.
- ERG will set up the next PRB Steering Committee conference call for September 15, 2004, between
3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
