CONFERENCE CALL

December 11, 1997

UPDATES

Sally Brown (USDA-ARS) mentioned that ILZRO (International Lead Zinc Research Organization) will help fund rat dosing studies at the University of Maryland to determine Pb-bioavailability on samples collected from the Joplin field research site. US EPA ERG (Emergency Response Group) may continue to fund the Interagency Agreement Grant (IAG) with the USDA at Bunker Hill, where they are using soil amendments and plants to stabilize a hillside.

RESEARCH

Dean Hesterberg (North Carolina State University) has co-authored a paper that will be submitted to the Journal of Environmental Quality. It discusses a method of preserving anoxic soil samples collected from wetlands.

SBRC

A draft of the in vitro protocol (Physiologically Based Extraction Test) that the Soluability Bioavailability Research Consortium (SBRC) is working to develop and validate is available. Please contact Bill Berti (DuPont) if you would like a copy.

SOIL SURVEY

The soil survey has been sent out to everyone on the IINERT mailing list. We've received several reponses already. Thanks! Please feel free to make copies and pass it on. If you have questions or comments, please contact Bill Berti or Jim Ryan (US EPA).

NEXT IINERT MEETING

The next IINERT RTDF meeting will be January 21-22 at the Las Vegas Hilton. A draft agenda went out to everyone the week of Dec. 15. Please make your room reservations directly with the hotel by calling 800-732-7117 or 702-732-5111 and reference the 'RTDF Meeting'. A block of rooms will be held until Tuesday, Jan. 6, 1998 at $74.12 single or double occupancy, tax included. After this date, reservations will be accepted on a space- and rate-available basis only.

BIOAVAILABILITY MATRIX

Mike Ruby and Roz Schoof of PTI Environmental Services are completing the bioavailability matrix started by Mark Maddaloni (US EPA) for Cyromolgus monkeys (As) and Sprague-Dawley rats (Pb and Cd).

DRAFT RESEARCH DOCUMENT

Everyone should have received a draft research document. The document includes some background information and an outline of the major research efforts we wish to undertake. We are looking for your comments, corrections, additions, and suggestions within the next few weeks so that they can be incorporated and the document distributed in advance of the Las Vegas IINERT meeting.
