SUMMARY OF THE REMEDIATION TECHNOLOGIES DEVELOPMENT FORUM
IN-PLACE INACTIVATION AND NATURAL ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION
TECHNOLOGIES SOIL-METALS ACTION TEAM
CONFERENCE CALL
June 15, 1999
3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m.
On Tuesday, June 15, 1999, the following members of the In-Place Inactivation and Natural Ecological Restoration Technologies (IINERT) Soil-Metals Action Team met in a conference call:
Bill Berti, DuPont Life Sciences (Action Team Co-Chair)
Sally Brown, University of Washington
Rahul Chawla, DuPont
Andrew Green, International Lead Zinc Research Organization
Judith Hallfrisch, United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
Dean Hesterberg, North Carolina State University
Steve Hilts, Trail Lead Taskforce
Also present was Christine Hartnett of Eastern Research Group, Inc. (ERG)..
ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION MEETING
Bill Berti said that IINERT Action Team members are planning to meet between June 21 and June 24. He said that 4 days of activities have been planned, including a 1-day workshop (June 21), a field trip to the Bunker Hill site (June 22), a 1-day meeting session (June 23), and a field trip to the Trail site (June 24). Berti noted that the workshop and meeting will be held at the Coeur d'Alene Inn and Conference Center in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, but that the field trips will take place in Kellogg, Idaho, and Trail, British Columbia. Sally Brown agreed to obtain vans to transport Action Team members to the field trip sites. She also agreed to make maps for those who want to travel in their own rental cars. Also, she agreed to make lunch reservations for June 22 near the Bunker Hill site.
The conference call participants identified some changes that needed to be made to the meeting agenda.
ERG agreed to make these changes and to forward the agenda to the Action Team co-chairs. In addition,
the conference call participants identified several people who are planning to attend the meeting even
though they have not registered. ERG agreed to add these names to the list of registrants before sending a
finalized list to the Action Team co-chairs. After receiving this list, Berti said, he will inform the Trail site
representatives of how many people to expect for the field trip that they are hosting.
ACTIVITIES RELATED TO THE JOPLIN, MISSOURI, SITE
Berti said that several IINERT Action Team members met recently in Columbia, Missouri, to summarize
data that has been collected at the Joplin site. Berti said that he has written a summary of the meeting
proceedings and that he will contact the meeting's attendees to ask if he may post it to the RTDF Web site.
He said that the summary identifies several Action Items that Action Team members agreed to take on. For
example, Berti said, (1) Brown agreed to analyze and streamline her plant data, (2) Mike Ruby agreed to
process soil samples with the physiologically based extraction test, (3) David Mosby agreed to summarize
all available data in his Master's thesis by the end of the summer, and (4) John Yang and Bob Blanchar
agreed to write papers summarizing soil chemistry experiments in the laboratory and the field.
COMPOST STUDY
Brown said that she initiated a greenhouse study to investigate how compost impacts sediments. As part of this experiment, Brown explained, treated samples will be analyzed for lead sulfide. Dean Hesterberg said that he would be willing to perform these analyses in August 1999. Brown and Hesterberg agreed to communicate offline about sampling protocols and shipping arrangements.
