STEERING COMMITTEE CONFERENCE CALL

On Wednesday, September 15, 2004, the following members of the Remediation Technologies Development Forum Permeable Reactive Barriers (PRB) Action Team's Steering Committee met in a conference call:

Bob Puls, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (Action Team Co-chair)
John Vidumsky, DuPont (Action Team Co-chair)
Michelle Thomson, URS Corporation
Matt Turner, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
Stephen White, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers

Also participating in the call was Christine Hartnett from ERG.

NEXT PRB ACTION TEAM MEETING

The next PRB Action Team meeting will take place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on October 26-27, 2004. The meeting will take place at the Best Western Winrock Inn, which is across the street from where the Interstate Technology Regulatory Council (ITRC) plans to hold its fall 2004 meeting. The Action Team's meeting will be broken into three topical sessions. John Vidumsky and Bob Puls provided a status report on the sessions they are organizing, which are:

• Source treatment for dense non-aqueous phase liquids and nanoscale iron applications. Vidumsky said that he has identified several potential speakers for this session, including Tom Sale, Richard Mach, and representatives from GeoSyntec, Arcadis, and NAVFAC. He plans to extend personal invitations to additional researchers.



• Other laboratory and field studies. Puls said that he has received some abstracts from people who would be good speakers for this session. Matt Turner advised inviting Hoeganaes Corporation to deliver a presentation, noting that this company has been working with Johns Hopkins University to test the remedial potential of formulations that consist of iron mixed with other metals.

During a previous conference call, Steering Committee members talked about holding a poster session on the evening of October 26, 2004. Puls said that he is not sure whether there is enough interest to support a poster session. He did note that some of the people who have expressed interest in delivering oral presentations have indicated that they would be willing to present posters if the agenda is too full to accommodate their presentations. So far, however, there appears to be enough room on the agenda to accommodate all those who have requested speaking slots.

ACTION ITEMS

The following action items were identified during the call:

• Session chairs (i.e., Vidumsky, Puls, and Krug) will continue to identify speakers for the meeting. Each session chair will e-mail speaker names and presentation titles to Chris Hartnett by October 1, 2004. Hartnett will compile the information she receives into a draft meeting agenda and distribute it to the PRB Steering Committee before October 4, 2004. (Note: Session chairs should also inform Hartnett if they have identified potential poster presenters. They should also indicate whether any of the proposed speakers have indicated that they would be willing to deliver poster presentations if there is not enough room on the agenda for more oral presentations.)



• Turner will ensure that the invitation for the PRB Action Team meeting is distributed to the entire ITRC membership.



• Puls will contact Connelly, GeoSierra, and ARS Technologies to ask whether they are interested in sponsoring coffee breaks and refreshments for the meeting. Puls will also remind Krug to offer Adventus a chance to serve as a sponsor.



• ERG will set up the next PRB Steering Committee conference call for October 4, 2004, between 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. EDT.
